Singapore could take legal action over leads, aka zombie fires. They're burning and turning skies orange in Indonesia and sending smoke across Southeast Asia. It's described as some of the worst wildfires since 2015, which led to an estimated 100,000 premature deaths. Singapore's air quality has been so low, it was ranked as the world's most polluted city. Some schools are closed in Malaysia and Timor-Leste to protect students and staff from the haze. More than 280,000 respiratory problems have been recorded in Indonesia since mid-August. Some can find refuge in safe shelters, equipped with air conditioning and oxygen tanks. These fires are notoriously hard to put out. Plantation expansion, flash and burn land clearing and canals that drain water have degraded peatlands, leaving the ground dangerously dry. They're dubbed zombie fires because they can smolder underground in dry peat and unexpectedly reignite even months later. Climate change and strong alineo make it worse. Ironically, intact wetlands store carbon, but when they burn, they release it, contributing to the very source that fuels them. Ironically, intact wetlands. Ironically, intact wetlands.
