This ship is in a bad way. It was attacked by a drone and caught fire near the coast of Bulgaria. Drone attacks here in the Black Sea are increasing and are even sinking commercial ships. The EU is saying the Black Sea has become another front of escalation of the Russian war in Ukraine. The Black Sea is bordered by EU and NATO members Bulgaria and Romania, Turkey, also a NATO member, plus Ukraine and Russia, among others. Bulgaria's prime minister summons the Russian ambassador because of the attacks, saying that logic suggests the outcome benefits Russia. Bulgaria has been conducting search and rescue operations for sailors of the ships hit and finding drones washed up on its beaches. For the first time, Bulgarian people started feeling that war is pretty close to our borders. Of course, this worries the EU for its security, but also for its trade. It wants to bring more of its imports from Asia, especially China, through the Black Sea and Bulgaria. This route is called the Middle Corridor. It goes from China to Europe, partly via the Black Sea. But with the drone attacks on ships, is expanding this route realistic? We can't say that shipping in the Black Sea is safe. And we can see from insurances for the ships. The last several days, the price of insurances increased by five. I mean, five times more. So why does the EU want more trade to come through here? Well, it's not happy with its traditional routes, via Russia, the unstable Middle East, or by going a really, really long way around Africa via ship. The EU has been saying that the Middle Corridor can be faster and safer, and that Bulgaria can be a kind of gateway into the EU, because it has strategic ports on the Black Sea and a land crossing from Turkey. Roads and railways on this land route are being beefed up to accommodate more imports, but it won't be enough for everything. Black Sea is an important part of this Middle Corridor. But without security, I don't think we will be able to use this opportunity to full extent.
